What does the Clean Water Act, 2006 mean?

The Clean Water Act, 2006 means the establishment of Source Protection Plans across Ontario to protect sources of municipal drinking water.

The Clean Water Act means a science-based approach to developing plans for protecting drinking water at its source. For the first time, communities are required to look at their municipal drinking water sources, identify potential sources of contamination, and create and carry out a plan to protect both the quality and quantity of the water.

The Clean Water Act means a collaborative, community approach which has municipalities, conservation authorities, farmers, industry, health officials, community groups, residents and others working together towards safe and reliable drinking water sources.

Most importantly the Clean Water Act means that we can be confident that Ontario's municipal drinking water is being safe-guarded through a multi-barrier approach.

The CTC Source Protection Committee leads this collaborative process and is composed of local representatives from different sectors and areas throughout the CTC.

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment’s Regulations and Legislation documents directs the Source Protection Committee in developing Source Protection Plans for the CTC Source Protection Region.
